In spite of assurances by President Muhammadu Buhari and security agencies that tommorow’s governorship election in Anambra State would hold in atmosphere of peace and tranquility, there is palpable fear in the State over the election following the unannounced sudden removal of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG); Joseph Egbunike as head of the special police team providing security to the state.

The State has in recent months faced security challenges from the separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and other criminally minded elements.

No reason has been given for Egbunike’s removal but AtlanticNewsonline learned that the new team leader is Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, Zaki Ahmed, who until now was the second in command to DIG Egbunike who hails from Anambra State and oversees the five police commands in the Southeast.

Egbunike’s sudden replacement is causing anxiety in Anambra State where opposition politicians have been accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC), the national government party, of attempting to impose its controversial candidate, Andy Uba, a former Senator, on the people.

Efforts made by AtlanticNewsonline to confirm the authenticity of the story and possible reasons for the sudden removal of the DIG less than 24 hours to election did not yield positive result as the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba; a Commissioner of Police could not respond to calls put across to him.

Neither did he respond to the message sent to his WhatsApp as at the time of filing this report.
