MEET FRANK OSHANUGOR
By Frank Oshanugor
The spate of senseless killings in Nigeria does not seem to abate anytime soon as assassins gruesomely murdered Dr. Chike Akunyili; husband of the late Minister of Information, Prof. Dora Akunyili at Umuoji in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Tuesday evening.
Though, details of the incident were sketchy as at time of filing this report, yet an unconfirmed source told AtlanticNewsonline that Dr. Akunyili attended a function at Onitsha same Tuesday where his late wife was post-humously honoured by the Alumni Association of University of Nigeria, Nsukka Onitsha Chapter.
It was however, not clear whether he was killed at the venue of the event or on his way home. The man was said to have made some donation at the occasion.
The late Chike Akunyili was a renowned medical doctor who had a blissful marriage with Dora throughout their academic sojourn at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka before she
was appointed Director General of the National Agency for Food Administration and Drug Control (NAFDAC) in 2001 by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration. She held the position for eight turbulent years as she gallantly and fearlessly fought fake drug merchants in Nigeria.
Several assassination attempts were made on her life but she divinely escaped all, and winning several awards for her meritorious service. She was later appointed Minister of Information by the Yar’Adua administration during which she fell sick and later succumbed to death.
