The ongoing national debate over the establishment of state police continues to generate passionate arguments on all sides. While many Nigerians see decentralised policing as a necessary response to rising insecurity, others urge caution, warning that structural reforms alone cannot resolve the deeper governance and institutional challenges affecting policing in the country.

Following the publication of my article, “State Police Debate: Lessons from Professor Etannibi Alemika,” Professor Chijioke Uwasomba of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, shared reflections that offer a valuable historical perspective on how policing once functioned in Nigeria. His comments, informed by his experience as the son of a police officer who served during what many remember as the more professional era of the Nigerian Police, remind us that Nigeria once had a policing system that was deeply rooted in local communities.

 The long-standing clamor for State Police in Nigeria has transitioned from a theoretical debate to a policy priority. With the recent resolution by the 36 State Governors and the strategic appointment of an 8-man committee by the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, the nation stands at a crossroads. The goal is clear: to move away from a colonial-era, unitary policing model and toward a decentralized system that reflects Nigeria’s federal reality.

It is still not clear why some Nigeria Police personnel allegedly brought from Zone 5 Headquarters, Benin-City have continued to aid and abet a Chinese, Mr. Gouquing Lin whose company New Base World Class Resources Limited has chosen to displace owners of land at Aboh Ogwashi-Uku in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Barely forty-eight hours after some concerned indigenes of Aboh Ogwashi-Uku community in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State called on the Inspector General of Police and Delta State Governor to order the immediate withdrawal of police personnel from their land, the same group (names withheld) has called security agencies in the State to urgently intervene as total break down of law and order is quite imminent.

The people of Aboh Ogwashi-Uku community in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State have pleaded with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to order the immediate withdrawal of police personnel deployed to assist a Chinese businessman in invading and claiming people’s land in the community.

Barely three years after some Fulani herdsmen killed a very notable farmer; Mr. Albert Chikwe Ojinji in the bush at Udo area of Ubulu-Uku in Delta State, another farmer cum palm wine tapper, 53-year-old Mr. Emmanuel Ekwunwa was on Sunday murdered by gunmen suspected to be of Fulani extraction.

The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police have failed to take up an invitation earlier extended to them the senior pastor and founder of the Grace Nation Church International, Lagos, Dr. Chris Okafor to come and dig up the church’s altar to ascertain whether or not recent claims by Nollywood actress, Doris Ogala that there was a buried human corpse was indeed true.

The killing of Nurse Chinemerem Pascalina Chukwumeziem, a staff nurse at the Federal Medical Centre Abuja, on the 3rd of January 2026, while returning home after closing late from work, is a tragedy that should shake the conscience of Nigeria because nurses are not just ordinary caregivers; their jobs come with huge sacrifices to preserve human life.

A major socio-political and cultural summit aimed at addressing insecurity, economic development and cultural preservation in Aniocha-Oshimili land is set to hold on Monday, December 29, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State
