The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Health Monitoring to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, Dr. Michael Nwoko has commended his boss for graciously approving the reconstruction and rehabilitation of failed sections of Onicha – Ugbo/Idumuje – Ugboko Road in Aniocha North Local Government Area of the State, which has been a major bye pass for motorists and transporters to the FCT, Abuja and the Northern part of Nigeria.

The SSA who hails from Idumuje – Ugboko, in a statement made available to AtlanticNewsonline at the weekend, expressed deep appreciation to His Excellency, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, the Governor of Delta State for giving approval for the execution of the project in February, 2022 with subsequent ratification of same by the State Executive Council on Friday 18th March, 2022.

The Governor’s Aide noted that the road which is a major link between Delta and Edo States with heavy vehicular flow to FCT, Abuja and other Northern States is of strategic economic importance.

According to him, “the road is usually impassable from April to December each year due to the deep gully and flooding situation which also results to serious flooding around homes within the affected areas in Onicha – Ugbo community.”

He added that “during this period, motorists and commuters are forced to take alternative routes to Idumuje – Ugboko and other communities in Edo State and FCT, Abuja. The flooding situation usually on the road had compelled affected residents to build up walls on both sides of the road in order to protect their properties from flooding but without results.”

The SSA also hailed Prince Ned Nwoko, a former House of Representatives member who represented Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency from 1999 to 2003 for working assiduously to draw Governor Okowa’s attention to the deplorable state of the road.

It will be recalled that a few weeks ago, youths of Onicha – Ugbo and Idumuje – Ugboko communities had protested peacefully to draw government’s attention to the impassable situation of the road which was made worse by heavy duty vehicles plying the route to Edo North, FCT, Abuja and other parts of Northern Nigeria.

“Residents of the affected area as well as motorists and commuters are full of joy as the construction work which is expected to be completed in few weeks will bring a lot of relief to them” Dr. Nwoko concluded.
