Angry Youths Attack Edo Boxing Coach Family Second Time Over Alleged Secret Training Of Gays

The wife and children of the Edo State Boxing Head Coach, Mr. Lucky Chinyere Oshanugor narrowly escaped death on Tuesday (16th January, 2024) when their Benin-City residence was besieged at night by angry youths who were reportedly searching for the head coach who is believed to be behind some clandestine training for potential gays in the state capital.

The Tuesday attack was the second in about three months as similar attack was carried on 31st October, 2023. During the attack, the coach’s wife was physically assaulted and left with some injuries.

ATLANTICNEWSONLINE investigation in Benin City revealed that the angry youths had vehemently resisted some subtle moves by young boys suspected to belong to an illegal organization known as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) to woo some innocent youths into the group.

Nigeria government is strongly against lesbianism and gay culture and would officially prosecute anyone who engages in it. Based on this, the angry youths who suspected that the Head Coach was in support of LGBTQ have penciled him down for attack.

As at press time, our investigation has not been able to prove if actually, Mr. Oshanugor the boxing head coach has anything to do with LGBTQ. He was said to have traveled to Canada for the 2023 edition of the Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament which held last October in Calgary Alberta Canada.

It was gathered that some of the angry youths who besieged his residence had mistakenly believed that he was back to the country from Canada and decided to storm his residence

unannounced with intent to physically assault or exterminate him.

Some anonymous sources close to the Head Coach’s family told our reporter that since the boxing team led by Mr. Lucky Chinyere Oshanugor won laurels in the 2023 National Youths Games held in Asaba, Delta State and automatically became popular in Edo State, some elements not quite happy with his success have been plotting to smear his personality for unexplained reasons.

A source who begged not to be mentioned, told our correspondent in Benin-City that one Mr. Oseni Shaibu was suspected to have master-minded the two attacks on Oshanugor’s family. The source hinted that Shaibu’s anger against the coach may have stemmed from the coach’s disassociation with Shaibu who was suspected to be his ‘partner’ in the gay parlance.

The source disclosed that both the coach and Shaibu were once in intimate relationship that largely suggested they were gay partners until the coach forcefully disengaged from the relationship when he opted to go into real marriage some years ago with his present wife.

Efforts to speak with the Head Coach’s injured wife in Benin-City failed as she was said to have gone into hiding with her children for fear of being attacked again in place of her husband.

The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer could not be reached as at press time for comments on the incident with a view to ascertaining if arrests were made or identities of the mob attackers established
