MEET FRANK OSHANUGOR

By Oskar Nwaudah (Guest Writer)
The recent distribution of 65 new SUVs to traditional rulers by Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori is not a gesture of respect; it is a calculated political investment using public funds to secure loyalty ahead of the 2027 elections. At a time when the state faces fundamental crises in welfare, security, and infrastructure, this act is a profound insult to every struggling citizen of Delta State.

It is rather obvious that the core motivation is nothing but political survival, not service. The government’s lofty words about “tools of service” and “inclusive governance” cannot mask the transparent political arithmetic behind this move.

· Consolidating a Fragile Coalition: Governor Sheriff Oborevwori recently defected from the PDP to the APC, creating a ruling party whose strength is described as “largely driven by elites rather than being organically rooted”. This gift is a direct patronage play to secure the support of influential community leaders, traditional rulers, to bolster this fragile political base.

· A Campaign Strategy for 2027: Analysts note the state’s political climate is “volatile” ahead of the 2027 elections. By lavishing expensive gifts on monarchs now, the governor is clearly attempting to “buy over the traditional rulers and sway their minds towards winning voters in these kingdoms”. The SUV is not a tool for service; it is a down payment for political loyalty.

Furthermore, this is a staggering misplacement of priority. The government’s claim to have “touched every segment of our population” is hollow when measured against glaring failures.
· Failed Basic Welfare: While presenting 65 luxury vehicles, the same Delta State government stands accused of failing to care for two severely abused girls in its custody, who reportedly ran out of food and were discharged without promised medical surgery. If it cannot fund food and healthcare for a single vulnerable case, its claims of statewide care are empty *.

· Ignored Public Sentiment : Citizens and civil society have explicitly stated that communities need light, good roads, and healthcare, not SUVs for monarchs. One critic labeled the gifts a “campaign strategy” and “Greek gift,” implying a treacherous bribe. This action widens the gap between the government and the people’s actual needs.
Undermining culture and community: Far from honouring tradition, this gesture risks corrupting it.
· Reducing Royalty to Political Agents: Transforming traditional rulers into beneficiaries of high-value state patronage directly compromises their expected role as independent custodians of culture and neutral community leaders. It turns them into extensions of the governing party’s machinery.
Conclusion: A Betrayal of Public Trust
Governor Oborevwori’s SUV distribution is a classic act of elite capture, diverting scarce public resources to comfort the already comfortable while the state crumbles. It is a betrayal of the constitutional mandate to secure the welfare of the people. This gesture will be remembered not as an achievement but as a symbol of a government that prioritizes political survival over the lives, dignity, and future of its citizens.
This gesture transforms gleaming vehicles into rolling monuments of misplaced priority, contrasting the comfort of a few against the crumbling infrastructure of the many. History’s verdict will be unforgiving: it will record not a gift of honour but a transaction that mortgaged public trust for political profit.
