MEET FRANK OSHANUGOR

By Frank Oshanugor
If the ‘Laugh Time’ comedy show put together by Ajotubu Concepts in Lagos on Sunday 30th November, 2025 was anything to go by, it was certainly a heart-warming occasion that largely revealed the unexplored talents of many Nigerians in the entertainment business.

The show brought to the fore; a galaxy of budding comedians whose comical prowess would always remain a soothing balm to any troubled heart particularly in this era of severe economic hardship and high level of insecurity. The appearance of young musical acts on stage was also an indicator of the greatness that lies ahead in the nation’s entertainment space.

Ranging from Big Mickey (Ajotubu Concepts boss) to the last comedian on stage, it was all an exciting time. The pack included Baba-de-Baba (who anchored the show), OJ Lafta, TMT, Alincology, MC Goodspeed, Lele O, MC Cure, Bishop Chikancy, Deacon Kahmoh, Osas, Xsod, Ojemba, J Blaze, Another Mog and others.

While performing individually on stage, one common denominator was the hilarious jokes that compelled the audience to reel in laughter. The comedians were masters in their own right. Same for the musical acts among whom were Mr. Awele, Mayboi, Narga, Proteck and others. They did not disappoint the audience.

Interestingly, all the comedians had some unique ways of icing their jokes with unseemly contemporary political, social, economic, religious issues by creating anecdotal fusions that left one with no choice but to laugh. The comic relief on the horizon was quite humongous and assuredly; leaving every guest happier going home than the mood they came in.

The convener of ‘Laugh Time,’ Mr. Michael Ajotubu (a.k.a. Big Mickey), an indigene of Delta State and graduate of Mathematics from the Delta State University, Abraka was the chief host of the show.

Speaking with ATLANTICNEWSONLINE on the sideline of the event, he said ‘Laugh Time with Big Mickey’ is a comedy show that holds annually. Like the comedian that he is, Ajobutu said even though he graduated in Mathematics many years ago, he could hardly solve any mathematical problem currently, as all his life is now into comedy.

According to him, his interest in comedy began during his undergraduate days at DELSU and “thank God, I am growing. Prior to this time of ticketing to watch my show, I have done two shows in church whereby it was meant to stoke some laughter and spice up gospel ministration in the church. The shows were merely to evangelize but I was soon to find out that not everybody was comfortable when the show takes place in the church, hence I decided to make it an open place affair, so that more people can participate.” Big Mickey is not new in the world of comedy particularly in Lagos and if you ask him how many years he had put in, he would simply tell you “I am counting decades.”

The Sunday show which took place at the Grace Pavilion event centre at Salvation Street, in Owode Area of Lagos had hundreds of comedy lovers from various walks of life in attendance. One of the attendees, Rev. Henry Edwards of Grace Court Christian Centre told ATLANTICNEWSONLINE that he came to the show to have fun, laugh and relax. He described the Nigerian entertainment industry generally as a growing industry, getting stronger and would hopefully get better.

According to the gospel preacher in every sense of joke, “I used to watch Big Mickey when I was small. I used to see him on TV when I was small. Now that I am grown up, I have come to watch him live.”

Another attendee who described himself as Mr. Richard said Big Mickey has been his friend over the years and he came to the show to enjoy himself. One of the lovers of Big Mickey comedy, Engr. Mathew said he had known the comedian over the years as someone whose jokes were quite hilarious. He commended his ability in being focused in his career as a comedian.

Pastor Chris Mbata also of Grace Court Christian Centre had heard of Big Mickey over the years through one of his daughters. Initially, they had not met physically until the day his daughter

brought him to their house and introduced Mickey to him as the comedian. He added that the visit marked the beginning of their family friendship and he attended the event with a view to assessing Mickey’s talent in comedy.

A property manager, Mr. Rokana Akinde (CEO of Rokana Properties) described Big Mickey as a very hilarious person and “when he is around you, he makes you happy. He makes you laugh, he makes you relax. I am here today to laugh, relax

myself and here also to learn one or two things, because when people make jokes, there is the tendency to learn one or two things. I have come to this event today with great expectations especially when other big comedians like Baba-de-Baba and others are here. They would definitely make us laugh and forget the problems in the country today.

The show which began late in the evening spilled into the night with a lot of attendees enjoying every segment of it as they also helped themselves with
drinks of various brands. The event was fully supported by the White House Academy.
