MEET FRANK OSHANUGOR

By Grace Hygie-Enwerem
In continuation of its care giving gesture, Tilda Care Foundation UK/Nigeria paid charity visits to the less privileged and motherless babies homes, in Owerri, Imo State with the support of Chief Charles Orie Foundation.

One of the recent beneficiaries of the benevolence of the Foundation was Love Care Child Centre, a mother less babies home situated at Obinze New Owerri, Imo State on the 11th of April 2026.
On the side line of the visit, our reporter who accompanied members of the Foundation had an interaction with the founder of the home on a number of issues verging on the Babies Home. Excerpt:
Can we meet you Madam?
My name is Mrs. Lauretta Madu and am the founder of this place. I retired from Ministry of women Affairs and Social Development and I work here with a few staff that help in running this place.
Is this place privately owned or by government
Yes, is privately owned but registered with government -Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

How do you get the children?
Some of the children come from police, they bring them here for safe keep pending when they will be taken away. some of them are from Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and some from their mothers, mainly single mothers with unwanted pregnancy. Not just direct from the women to us, even if any child is brought direct he/she will still be registered under the ministry.Every single child here has a file here and at the ministry.

*Are they for adoption?
Yes, some of them are while some are not, especially those that come from police because they are for safe keep pending why they are brought here is solved like some have their parents or parent having challenges. Otherwise they are for adoption because every child should be given the opportunity to a home and name.

*What’s the procedure?
The process is long . If an applicant shows interest, you first go to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and submit application, then the ministry will direct the person to any of the homes registered with them in the state. If the person comes here,he/she will also submit an application with us as well. And when all necessary procedures are concluded, the final adoption is concluded in the court, we call it the family court – it’s a special court for adoption. The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development is majorly involved, the police, the home and finally the family court.

What’s the population of the children?
We do not have much population because the children come and go but now we have 12 children and 5 metro babies.

How do you supply their needs?
Just like the way Tilda Care in collaboration with Chief Charles Orie Foundation just remembered us and supported us. We rely heavily on support from public spirited individuals. Sometimes wife of the governor helps, some other time Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development helps but otherwise I will provide their needs if nobody comes to support.

Are they in school?
Yes everyone of them that is old enough to be in school is in school except for the little babies.
What’s your benefit for setting up this home?
So many benefits – one as a Christian I believe in what am doing, am sure God in His infinite mercy will be helping me. It’s never been too difficult, there are challenges though, there are so many challenges attached but, it gives me joy whenever I cross any huddle of challenge. So I can say my benefit is from God.

Have you had any of them grow up to age of marriage both sexes?
No, no , like I said before, I worked with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and retired 11 years ago. That’s when I started this home, we are like 11 years old. Even at that God has used us in these 11years to touch families that did not have children to have. If we go through our files, I know we have been able to give out about more than 250 children to families who do not have children. Sometimes when I remember it as we have touched families binding families I feel good in spite of the challenges in it.
