MEET FRANK OSHANUGOR

By Oskar Nwaudah
To call Tinubu a democrat is a blatant misnomer. His claim to being a democrat is a farce and a label that bears no resemblance to his actions and intentions. A democrat, by definition, is someone who believes in the principles of democracy, including free and fair elections, the rule of law, and the protection of individual rights and freedoms.

But most importantly, a democrat exhibits tolerance for the existence and freedom of the functioning of vibrant opposition parties, not their annihilation. A democrat understands that opposition parties are a crucial component of a healthy democracy, providing alternative viewpoints, holding the government accountable and ensuring that power is not concentrated in the hands of a few. Democrats value diversity of opinion, promote inclusivity, and respect the voices of opposition parties.
Tinubu, on the other hand, is a stark contrast to this definition.
His actions paint a different picture and are a direct threat to democracy; they demonstrate a blatant disregard for democratic principles, as he seeks to annihilate opposition parties and consolidate power in the hands of his APC.
His relentless pursuit of a one-party state, where opposition parties are weakened and marginalized, is a direct threat to democracy. By using every trick in the book to lure opposition members into his APC fold and silence dissenting voices, Tinubu is undermining the very fabric of democratic governance. The reported meeting in London with several opposition governors, where he allegedly attempted to lure them into defecting to the APC, is a clear example of his efforts to undermine and crush opposition parties in order to maintain his grip on power. This brazen attempt to subvert the democratic process and eliminate any opposition to his rule is a classic trait of authoritarian leaders, not democrats crush opposition parties.
The Dangers of Tinubu’s Actions
The danger of Tinubu’s actions cannot be overstated. When a leader seeks to annihilate opposition parties, it creates an environment ripe for abuse of power, suppresses alternative viewpoints, and stifles dissent. When one party dominates the political landscape, that becomes a recipe for disaster. The absence of robust opposition allows the ruling party to act with impunity, unchecked by the scrutiny and accountability that comes with healthy political competition. Nigerians must be vigilant in resisting Tinubu’s attempts to undermine democracy.

Insecurity and Economic Hardship
Meanwhile, Nigeria faces pressing challenges that demand urgent attention. Insecurity, fueled by the takeover of Nigeria’s forests by Fulani bandits and kidnappers, has restricted farming activities, made road travel unsafe, and created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. Nigerians are hungry, not just for food, but also for security and stability. Instead of addressing these critical issues, Tinubu’s priorities are fixated on forcing his way back to power in 2027.
This is a gross misallocation of priorities. When the leader of a country is more focused on maintaining power than on serving the people, it is a clear sign of authoritarian tendencies. Tinubu’s actions demonstrate a callous disregard for the welfare of Nigerans and things of concern to them. Nigerians are crying out for relief from the scourge of insecurity and economic hardship.

Tinubu’s silence on the insecurity crisis is deafening and condemnable. As the leader of the country, it is his duty to address the root causes of insecurity and provide solutions to the suffering of Nigerians. Instead, he has chosen to remain silent, ignoring the pleas of the people and prioritizing his own power ambitions. This is a betrayal of the highest order, a demonstration of Tinubu’s utter lack of empathy and concern for the welfare of Nigerians.
The people of Nigeria are suffering, and Tinubu’s inaction is a direct contributor to their hardship. The economy is in shambles, insecurity is rampant, and the government seems more interested in maintaining its grip on power than in serving the people. This is a clear case of leadership failure, and Tinubu must be held accountable for his actions.
In a democratic system, leaders are expected to prioritize the needs of the people, not their own power ambitions. Tinubu’s APC is more interested in maintaining its grip on power than in addressing the pressing issues that affect Nigerians’ daily lives. This is not democracy; it’s a recipe for disaster.

To call Tinubu a democrat is to sanitize his authoritarian tendencies, to gloss over his blatant disregard for democratic principles. It’s time to hold him accountable for his actions, to demand that he prioritizes the needs of Nigerians over his own power ambitions. The people deserve better; they deserve leaders who will put their interests first, not their own political survival.
The greatest tragedy is that Nigerians are suffering under Tinubu’s leadership, and he seems more concerned with consolidating power than with addressing their plight. The insecurity crisis, the economic hardship, and the general suffering of the people are all testaments to Tinubu’s failure as a leader. He has abandoned his duty to the people and is instead focused on his own selfish interests.
CONCLUSION
Tinubu’s legacy will be one of failure and betrayal. He will be remembered as a leader who prioritized power over people, who ignored the suffering of Nigerians, and who undermined the democratic principles that brought him to power. His name will be synonymous with authoritarianism, and his actions will be condemned by history.
Finally, Tinubu’s claim to democracy is a farce, a thin veil for his authoritarian ambitions. His actions demonstrate a clear disregard for democratic principles and his priorities are fixated on consolidating power rather than serving the people. It’s time to call him out for what he is – a power-hungry politician who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals, even if it means undermining democracy and ignoring the needs of Nigerians. Nigerians must reject Tinubu’s authoritarian agenda and demand a return to democratic principles.
