The ongoing national debate over the establishment of state police continues to generate passionate arguments on all sides. While many Nigerians see decentralised policing as a necessary response to rising insecurity, others urge caution, warning that structural reforms alone cannot resolve the deeper governance and institutional challenges affecting policing in the country.
Following the publication of my article, “State Police Debate: Lessons from Professor Etannibi Alemika,” Professor Chijioke Uwasomba of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, shared reflections that offer a valuable historical perspective on how policing once functioned in Nigeria. His comments, informed by his experience as the son of a police officer who served during what many remember as the more professional era of the Nigerian Police, remind us that Nigeria once had a policing system that was deeply rooted in local communities.

The goal is clear: to move away from a colonial-era, unitary policing model and toward a decentralized system that reflects Nigeria’s federal reality.

Nigerians particularly Christians have been advised not to dwell so much in what looks like their glorious days of the past; as doing so, may not guarantee success for them in present time.
For the younger generation, the name Bakin Zuwo may not ring a bell. He was the governor of the old Kano State that included the present day Jigawa State. He held forth for just three months in 1983 until December 31 when then Major General Muhammadu Buhari overthrew the second republic government of Alhaji Shehu Shagari.

The initiative which is a FREE 3GB SIM offer, allows new customers to test-drive the Smile network before making a commitment. According to the company, the move is part of a broader strategy informed by deliberate consumer research conducted over the past year, which revealed that many customers value the opportunity to experience service quality before subscribing to a full plan.
